FAQs

Are you an independent bookshop?

We are indeed, proudly so! Nestled in the heart of Fort William, we’ve been championing good stories and great chat since opening our doors. Being indie means we curate our shelves with books we genuinely love (and think you will too)! We’re always happy to recommend a great read or help you track down something special.

Can you check what you have in stock on your system?

Mostly, yes! Our system tells us what we should have on the shelves, though the occasional rogue book may sneak off for a wander. If you're looking for something specific, give us a call and we’ll do our best to confirm availability before you make the trip.

You don’t have the book I want in stock, Can you order it for me?

Yes, absolutely. Most titles can be ordered to arrive within 3–5 working days. More specific requests might take a wee bit longer, as we sometimes need to do a bit of digging for special order lines. Books can be delivered to the shop for collection, or we can post them directly out to you. Just get in touch with what you're after and we'll take it from there.

Do you do events?

We do! We run two regular monthly groups that are free and open to all:

• Our Writers’ Group meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 7.30pm
• Our Book Group meets on the second Monday of every month at 6pm

No need to book in advance. Just come along and join in.

We also host a small number of author and book events throughout the year. Keep an eye on our Eventbrite page and social media channels for upcoming announcements.

If you're an author or publisher hoping to launch a book or host an event with us, please get in touch via our Contact page with a few details and we’ll get back to you.

Do you publish books?

We don’t, no. But if you're looking to get your book published, here's a handy guide from Penguin with advice on where to start: Get published

Can you stock my book?

Firstly, congratulations on your book! We really admire the time and effort it takes to write and publish. As much as we’d love to support every local and indie author, our shelf space is limited so we take things on a case-by-case basis.

Before getting in touch, we recommend having a read through this helpful guide from the Booksellers Association: Getting your book stocked

If you still feel your book might be a good fit for the shop, please send us an email with a short description, cover image, ISBN, and any reviews. We’ll have a proper look and get back to you if we feel it suits our selection.

Do you buy secondhand books?

We do but with a few caveats. Our secondhand section is a curated selection with a focus on Scottish history, nature, outdoors and the like. You can find full details over on our Secondhand Books page.

Do you sell audiobooks?

Yes! We’re proud partners of Libro.fm, a platform that lets you buy audiobooks while supporting us (instead of that big online retailer who shall not be named). You get brilliant listening, we get a bit of love, and everyone wins. Check it out here: Libro.fm

Where can I use my Highland Bookshop voucher?

Highland Bookshop gift vouchers can be used instore only.

Do you take National Book Tokens?

We do! You can redeem National Book Tokens instore at the till point.

Do you sell books online?

Yes! We’re currently building up our own online shop, which will feature a carefully chosen selection of local authors, signed editions, Highland-inspired artwork and prints, and all our lovely bookshop merchandise.

For a wider range, we’ve also partnered with Bookshop.org, where you can browse a full catalogue of over 4.8 million titles. Every order placed there supports us too - win-win.

Can I bring my dog in?

Sometimes, we are dog friendly and very well-behaved dogs will often get a little treat at the till. That said, on rainy days we ask that fluffy friends stay outside. Paper books and wet dogs just don’t mix very well!

Do you have a cafe?

No, but we can point you to plenty of excellent nearby spots for a coffee and a sweet treat. Ask us for a recommendation - we’ve done the research.

Do you do gift wrapping?

We do! It’s free, it’s brown paper (because we love the classics). Just ask at the till as you go to purchase. We also have a lovely selection of printed gift wrap by independent artists available to buy.

Do you offer discounts?

Yes - we offer 10% off with a valid student card or Blue Light card. Just show it at the till.

Are you wheel chair accessible?

Our ground floor is fully accessible for wheelchairs and prams. Unfortunately, our upper floors are only accessible via stairs. If you need any assistance during your visit, please let us know - we’re more than happy to help.

Where can I park?

Fort William High Street doesn’t allow on-street parking during peak hours, but there are several paid car parks nearby: Middle Street and Viewforth (right by the cinema) are both handy options. We also have a disabled parking bay right next door in Monzie Square.
